The best robot vacuums for most homes

If you want one machine that maps, avoids most cords, and does not demand a weekend of fiddling, buy a mid-range Lidar model with a self-empty dock. Spend more only if you have heavy pet hair or a large, multi-floor house. Spend less if you have mostly hard floors and will empty the bin yourself.

This is a methodology-based starting point, not a paid ranking. Retailer buttons go to the merchant, not a single-store checkout. Affiliate links are marked; see our disclosure.

How to choose

  1. Floor mix. Thick carpet needs stronger suction and a brush that resists hair wrap.
  2. Clutter. If you leave cables out, obstacle avoidance matters more than peak Pa on a spec sheet.
  3. Dock. Self-empty is worth it if you will otherwise skip runs.
  4. Merchant. Compare return windows. Best Buy and Target are often easier for in-person returns than marketplace sellers.
